Adélaïde Labille-Guiard (Paris, 1749-1803) Huile sur toile ovale. Inscrit à l’encre au dos sur le châssis en bas à gauche : «Labille dte Guiard / l’an 3e de la Rep. que » 65 x 54 cm Exposition : Luxembourg, Villa Vauban, 2 décembre 2000 - 4 février 2001, Portrait(s) d’un collectionneur, n° 67, p. 24 (Portrait d'un gentillhomme). Collection privée française. Ce portrait d’Adélaïde Labille-Guiard réapparu, en 2000 à l’occasion d’une exposition à la Villa Vauban, vient enrichir de manière importante le corpus de cette artiste. La très belle qualité de l’oeuvre a retrouvé toute sa finesse grâce au travail de restauration récent de Stéphanie Martin et a permis de confirmer l’attribution en révélant des détails d’exécution typiques de la manière de l’artiste. Le portrait est sur sa toile d’origine et l’inscription sur le châssis semble très vraisemblablement être de la main de l’artiste en comparaison des signatures et inscriptions que l’on trouve sur ses oeuvres et sur lesquelles on reconnait cette même graphie. Elle correspond de plus à celle que Labille-Guiard a apposée régulièrement sur ses oeuvres à partir de l’an 3. Si dans les années qui précèdent, l’artiste signe avec des mentions légèrement différentes en particulier Labille, Labille f. Guiard, Labille f me Guiard ou encore Labille Guiard, elle va dès l’an 3 affirmer sa rupture définitive avec son mari par cette nouvelle signature. Adélaïde Labille avait épousé le 25 août 1769 Louis-Nicolas Guiard, on sait que ce mariage ne fut pas heureux et que les deux époux ne vécurent ensemble qu’une dizaine d’années. La loi sur le divorce ayant été votée en septembre 1792, Adélaïde Labille-Guiard s’empressa de demander le divorce qui sera prononcé le 12 mars 1793. L’identité du modèle en comparaison avec d’autres portraits représentant Hérault de Séchelles a pu être révélée récemment grâce à l’aide toujours précieuse et amicale du Conservatoire du portrait du XVIIIe siècle que je tiens à remercier chaleureusement. L’oeuvre présentée ici est notamment très proche du célèbre portrait peint par Jean-Louis Laneuville vers 1793 et conservé au musée Carnavalet (inv. P. 2539) ou encore de l’estampe gravée dans ces mêmes années par Jean-Baptiste Compagnie d’après un dessin de François Bonneville et dont une épreuve est conservée également à Carnavalet (inv. G. 42317). Fils de Jean-Baptiste Martin Hérault de Séchelles et de Marie-Marguerite Magon de La Lande, Marie-Jean Hérault de Séchelles (Paris, 15 novembre 1759–5 avril 1794) est un homme clé de la Révolution. Selon toute vraisemblance, son père était le fils illégitime du maréchal Louis Georges Erasme de Contades. On doit à ce propos souligner qu’un très séduisant portrait de Marie-Jean Hérault de Séchelles, peint à l’âge de quatre ans par François-Hubert Drouais, est conservé au château de Montgeoffroy, berceau de la famille de Contades. Dès l’âge de dix-huit ans il embrasse la carrière d’avocat, nommé avocat du Roi, au Châtelet de Paris. Dans les salons parisiens, la compagnie de ce très jeune homme, très beau, élégant - les contemporains sont unanimes - et spirituel, ouvert aux idées nouvelles, était très recherchée. La Reine Marie-Antoinette fut sensible à son charme, et grâce à une dispense accordée par la souveraine en 1785, il devint le plus jeune avocat général du Châtelet. En 1791, il est nommé commissaire auprès du tribunal de cassation par Louis XVI. Il s’est toujours vanté d’avoir participé à la prise de la Bastille, et pourtant, sous la Révolution, il aurait discrètement négocié avec l’Autriche l’éventuelle libération de la Reine. Elu député à l’Assemblée législative en 1791, il siège avec les Montagnards et occupera tour à tour des postes importants au sein des Comités de la Convention nationale, notamment celui chargé de l’Instruction publique puis celui de la Sûreté générale avant d’être élu président de l’Assemblée le 1er novembre 1792. Hérault de Séchelles n’est pas présent au procès de Louis XVI mais se prononcera à distance pour la mort du roi. Il sera l’un des rédacteurs de la Constitution de l’An I et de la Déclaration des droits de l’homme et du citoyen de 1793. Son idéalisme et sa grande popularité auprès des Parisiens se sont heurtés au rigorisme et sans doute aussi à la jalousie de Robespierre. Lié avec Danton, on l’accuse notamment d’entretenir des relations avec les émigrés. Suspecté de trahison par les députés il est, sur proposition de Saint-Just, arrêté le 17 mars 1794 et sera guillotiné le 5 avril 1794 avec Danton et plusieurs dantonistes dont Fabre d’Eglantine et Camille Desmoulins. Il sera inhumé dans une fosse commune au cimetière des Errancis, puis, lors de la fermeture de ce cimetière, ses restes furent transférés aux Catacombes de Paris. On a écrit que Marie-Jean Hérault de Séchelles «a toujours été en porte-à-faux vis-à-vis de ses contemporains» et qu’il «avait un pied dans la Révolution, un autre dans ce monde qui disparaissait». C’est là une des contradictions qui caractérisent Hérault de Séchelles, jeune aristocrate cultivé, désinvolte et avide de plaisirs, mais aussi ouvert sur le monde moderne qu’il pressentait. Après sa réception à l’Académie Royale de peinture et de Sculpture en 1783, Adélaïde Labille-Guiard expose régulièrement au Salon où elle rencontre un grand succès. En 1791, alors que Mesdames, ses protectrices émigrent, l’artiste doit rechercher une nouvelle 1- Voir à propos de ce portrait la notice d’Isabelle Mayer-Michalon, dans Tradition and Transitions. Je tiens à remercier chaleureusement Isabelle Mayer-Michalon pour ses conseils. clientèle, et va trouver de nouvelles commandes en particulier auprès des députés. Elle présente au Salon cette même année un nombre important de portraits de députés de l’Assemblée nationale Constituante, dont celui de Talleyrand et de Robespierre. Peinte trois ans plus tard l’oeuvre présentée ici est à rattacher à cet ensemble de portraits On doit noter que l’inscription sur le châssis mentionne la date de l’an 3 ce qui pourrait situer la réalisation de l’oeuvre près de cinq mois après la mort d’Hérault de Séchelles. Ce portrait avait-il été commencé avant l’an 3, est-ce une commande de la famille du député après son décès ? Les recherches effectuées n’ont pas pour le moment permis de le confirmer. Ce portrait d’Hérault de Séchelles est très proche d’un portrait d’homme conservé dans la collection Horvitz (Wilmington, inv. P-F- 45)1 et peint également l’an 3 ou peut-être l’an 5, le chiffre étant difficile à lire précisément, et dont l’identité est encore à préciser. On note sur les deux oeuvres une manière identique de placer le modèle de trois quarts en buste, le visage tourné légèrement vers la droite en direction de l’artiste et du spectateur. Le cadrage dans un ovale est identique également. Ce qui rapproche encore plus ces deux portraits c’est une expression assez semblable qui mêle subtilement douceur par un léger sourire mais calme détermination dans le regard. Labille-Guiard montre ici, une fois encore à quel point elle rend avec justesse la psychologie de ses modèles. Si le costume porté par Hérault de Séchelles est sobre il n’est pas dénué d’une évidente recherche d’élégance. La redingote noire est doublée d’un velours d’un joli vert olive réveillé par la couleur chaude et complémentaire du rouge cerise du gilet fermé par des boutons de nacre dans lesquels se reflètent les nuances du velours vert. Le Conventionnel porte une perruque poudrée, très délicatement peinte mèche par mèche par Labille-Guiard qui reste fidèle dans ses tableaux peints à l’huile à sa virtuosité de pastelliste. Sophie Join-Lambert 5 novembre 2020 Sophie Join-Lambert, docteur en histoire de l’art et conservateur en chef du patrimoine, rédige actuellement le catalogue raisonné de l’oeuvre d’Adélaïde Labille-Guiard, dans lequel figurera le tableau que nous présentons.

VAT RULES
Non-European buyers may have all VAT invoiced refunded to them if they request so in writing to the accounting department within delay of 3 months of the date of sale, and if they provide with the third sample of the customs documentation (DAU) stamped by customs. must appear as shipper on the export document and the buyer as the consignee. The exportation has to be done within the legal delays and a maximum of 3 months of the date of sale.

No claim can be accepted for minor restoration or small damages.
lt is the responsability of the prospective bidders to inspect each lot prior to the sale and to satisfy themselves that each lot corresponds with its description. Given that the re-lining, frames and finings constitute protective measures and not defects, they will not be noted. Any measurements provided are only approximate.
All prospective buyers shall have the opportunity to inspect each object for sale during the presale exhibition in order to satisfy themselves as to characteristics, size as well as any necessary repairs or restoration.

A currency converter wili be operated in the salesroom for your convenience but, as errors may occur, you should not rely upon it as substituts for bidding in euros.

To bid in person at the auction, you will need to register for and collect a numbered paddle before the auction begins. Proof of identity will be required.
If you wish to bid on a lot, please indicate clearly that you are bidding by raising you paddle and attracting the attention of the auctioneer. Should you be the successful buyers of any lot, please ensure that the auctioneer can see your paddle and that it is your number that is called out.
Should there be any doubts as to price or buyer, please draw the auctioneer's attention to it immediately.
We will invoice all lots sold to the name and address in which the paddle has been registered and invoices cannot be transferred to other names and addresses.

Bidding as principal

Absentee bids
If you cannot attend the auction, we will pleased to execute written bids on your behalf. A bidding form can be found at the back of this catalogue. This service is free and confidential.
Lots will be bought as cheaply as is consistent with other bide and the reserves. In the event of identical bids, the earliest bid received will take precedence. Always indicate a top limit

Preemption right
The French state retains a preemption right on certain works of art and archives which may be exercised during the auction.
In case of confirmation of the preemption right within fifteen (15) days from the date of the sale, the French state shall be subrogated in the buyers position.

Catalogue descriptions
