Item Overview

Description

* ADRIAN WISZNIEWSKI RSA (Scottish b 1958 - ) The Girl with A Flute pastels, signed and dated 83 39cm x 52.5cm (15 1/2 x 20 3/4 inches) Note : Adrian Wiszniewski was born in Glasgow in 1958. He studied architecture at the Mackintosh School of Architecture and then attended Glasgow School of Art from 1979 to 1983. He belongs to the group of Glasgow based artists known as The New Glasgow Boys (Wiszniewski, Howson, Conroy, Campbell & Currie) who led the revival of figurative painting in Scottish art during the 1980s with the landmark exhibition "Vigorous Imagination" at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. "The Girl With A Flute" depicts the deterioration of a romantic relationship. The metronome represents the passing of time and whilst the two naked figures are together, they are almost oblivious of each other. The detachment of the girl is further emphasized by her pre-occupation with the flute. The sinking moon symbolizes an ending and the pallette of reds and blues symbolises warmth turning to coldness. Wiszniewski's work can be found in major private, corporate and public collections around the world including M.O.M.A. (New York), The Tate (London), The V&A (London), Setegaya (Tokyo) and The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art.
