Notes

Robinson, a contemporary of the Group of Seven and long-time painting companion of A.Y. Jackson, was a distinguished artist and subtle colourist in his own right. He was invited to exhibit with the Group in their first collective show in 1920, but declined, although he did show with them in all subsequent Group shows. He found the core of his inspiration in the quaint, small Quebec farms and villages along the shore of the St. Lawrence River.

As A.K. Prakash notes, "Robinson had the distinction of being predominantly lyrical, rather than stylized like Jackson or romantic like Gagnon." This canvas manifests both Robinson's distinctive use of colour and his seemingly easy, but rigorously determined, ability to render complete compositions.
