Description

ALBERT LEIGHTON RAWSON (AMERICAN 1829-1902). VILLAGE CROSSROADS, MYERSTOWN, VIRGINIA, CIRCA 1864. Oil on canvas, 16 x 20 inches. Signed "A.L. Rawson" on box l.r. Inscribed on the larger box "Myerstown, VA" and "Cap. Blazer/ Lt. Cole."The inscriptions refer to a Civil War skirmish at Myerstown in 1864 between Union cavalry under Capt. R. Blazer and Confederate cavalry under Major Richards. The Confederates, armed with revolvers, ambushed and routed the Union soldiers. The figure in a suit may be a self-portrait of the artist, who worked as an illustrator and engraver, taking notes on the battle.
