A gentleman, in black coat, black waistcoat, white shirt, stock and crossed cravat secured with gold tie-pin, dark hair; together with a gentleman called Robert Tuphook, in black coat, white shirt, black cravat, grey hair, by Robert Thomas Stothart, F.S.A. (British, fl. 1821-1865)
the former, signed and dated 'A. Christie 1832' (lower left)
on ivory
rectangular, 3¾ x 2 15/16 in. (95 x 75 mm.), stamped gilt-metal frame; 2¼ x 1¾ in. (57 x 44 mm.), foliate-chased brass mount within black ebonised frame, respectively
A paper in the reverse of the miniature by Stothard is inscribed 'R. J. Stothard Delυt. 1876 Aged 69 years' 'portrait of Robert Tuphook Bookseller in his 86υtυh year [...]'. An associated paper is inscribed 'Miniature Portrait of Robert Tuphook Presented by Mr Stothard to his daughter May 28υtυh 1867'. (2)
