Description

ALEXANDER MILNE CALDER (American 1846-1923) LEFT INDEX FINGER FROM ORIGINAL MODEL OF THE STATUE OF WILLIAM PENN plaster cast sheathed in copper 23 1/2 in. (59.7 cm) (high). Executed in 1892. Note: This comprises one of forty seven component pieces of Calder ' s statue of William Penn situated on top of Philadelphia ' s City Hall. These were presented to dignitaries upon completion of the commission. In this instance, it was given to Frances A. Drexel and then in turn, Louis Bouvier Drexel Morrell who subsequently bequeathed it to Xavier University of Louisana. It was acquired by the present owner at an auction in these rooms in the late 1960 ' s or early 1970 ' s.
