Provenance:Private Collection, Toronto Exhibited:Art Association of Montreal, 46th Spring Exhibition, 1929, catalogue #14 Alexandre Bercovitch studied to be an artist and teacher in his native Russia, then later in Israel and Germany. He emigrated in 1926 from Turkestan to Montreal, where he struggled to support his family by doing decorative and commercial art projects. He took a teaching job as well as doing set design in the local Yiddish theatre. Bercovitch also continued to create paintings and drawings, despite having few opportunities to exhibit them. This rare work demonstrates the artist's modernist leanings and talent for strong design.
