NOTE

The son of a soldier, Chernyshev was born in Orenburg but moved to St Petersburg in 1841 where he took lessons from Alexei Venetsianov, before studying at the Imperial Academy of Arts. On graduating. he received a travel scholarship from the Academy and from the Society for the Encouragement of Artists and worked in Italy and Paris. He is best known for his landscape painting and genre scenes, including a number of family groups executed in the style of the Venetian School. Chernyshev was made an Academician in 1860.
