After seeing d'Orsay's work, a delighted Duke of Wellington declared that he was the only artist who had managed to depict him looking like a gentleman. The Comte d'Orsay was a leading social figure in London and Paris who, among other claims to fame, wrote a fashion column in London's Daily News in the 1830s.
