Description

[FINANCIAL] Alfred L. Aiken (1870-1946) was the first leader at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston. He served as governor of the Bank from November 1914 to December 1917. He also served as an advisor to Rhode Island Senator Nelson W. Aldrich when Aldrich chaired the National Monetary Commission. Although offered the position of assistant secretary of the Treasury by President Taft in 1909, he declined the appointment. Offered here is a 1905 edition of Mary Mapes Dodge book, HANS BRINKER or The Silver Skates. He has written and signed an inscription on the flyleaf "Wm. Appleton Aiken 2nd from his father, to whom as a boy this book was a never failing sence [sic] of pleasure, Alfred L. Aiken April 1907." Alfred's son William was born in 1907 therefore was given this book as a newborn. William Appleton Aiken (1907-1957) received his B.A. from Yale in 1929, a M. Litt. degree from Cambridge in 1932; and his Ph.D. from Yale in 1939. He was an instructor in history at McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, from 1938-1940; then taught English history at Lehigh University. During World War II, Aiken served from 1942-1946 in United States Army military intelligence. From 1942-1943, he worked in the Pentagon, specializing in the Middle East. In 1943, Aiken went to the Middle East for the Army and Office of War Information and stayed until 1944. After the war he was a consultant to the Joint Chiefs of Staff on psychological warfare. 393 pp. Attractive gilt cover; 3 small white stains on back cover.
