Alfred Lakos 1870 - 1961 Hungarian oil on canvas Talmud 24 x 31 3/4 inches 61 x 80.6 centimeters signed Provenance:Private Collection, Vancouver The chief rabbi depicted in the painting is Koppel Reich, a well-known member of an important rabbinical family. He was elected the chief rabbi of the Orthodox community in Budapest. His father was Abraham Ezekiel Reich (rabbi of Bennevitz, Germany). Koppel Reich was also made a royal councillor by Emperor Franz Joseph I. He became the first rabbi to represent the Orthodox Jewish community in the upper house of the Hungarian parliament, serving as a senator. Please note: this work is unframed.
