Notes

THE PROPERTY OF A NOBLEMAN

Alfred Morgan's portrait of Queen Victoria depicts the monarch giving thanks for her Golden Jubilee, and encourages the viewer to do likewise. Figure studies were rare in Morgan's oeuvre, and curiously were seldom submitted to the Royal Academy. Along with Morgan's most ambitous work, An Omnibus Ride to Piccadilly Circus - Mr Gladstone travelling with ordinary passengers, sold at Sotheby's London, 12 June 2003, lot 38 (£476,000), this picture does not appear to have been exhibited, and may indeed have been a private commission.

No VAT will be charged on the hammer price, but VAT at 17.5% will be added to the buyer's premium, which is invoiced on a VAT inclusive basis.
