PROVENANCE Private collection, Buenos Aires EXHIBITION Buenos Aires, Sal¢n Direcci¢n Nacional de Bellas Artes, Exposici¢n Homenaje Alfredo Guttero, 1933, n.p., n. 62. NOTES In the early 20th Century, the development of Modern Art in Argentina was assisted by many factors not the least of which was the influx of immigrants to the country. New technology and the ease of travel allowed for young artists to visit Europe where they were able to observe the new artistic trends propelling new movements there. As a result of this integration, a number of movements developed in Argentina. One group of artists was known as the Grupo de Paris, and was instrumental in introducing innovations in pictorial and ideological theories. But there was also innovation occurring locally both independently and concurrently with these imported theories. Alfredo Guttero was not a member of the Grupo but was nonetheless an important figure in the development of Modern Art in Argentina. Through his influence the many independent vanguard movements that were emerging were given an important space in the Sal¢n oficial- el Nuevo Sal¢n (1929) y la Secci¢n de Arte Pl stico de la Asociacion Wagneriana (1930) propelling the Modern Movement to prominent visibility among the public.
