In a letter of authenticity referring to this work dated 18 March 2004, Jeffrey R. Brown states, "The brushwork and palette is typical of Bricher's output during the mid 1860s. The location of the subject is suggested by related drawings of rock bordering water at Shokan, New York [which] appear in an unpublished 1865 sketchbook. This book contains pencil sketches on toned papers inscribed Newport [Rhode Island], Esopus Creek [near Saugerties, Ulster County] and Shokan. Some of the Shokan drawings are dated between June 14th and July 27th. Drawings in another sketchbook indicate that he also visited Cossens Landing and Kingston, New York near the Hudson River."
