Marketplaces in nineteenth century Germany were central to a cultural and social life. In the present work, a bustling market shows vendors selling their fresh breads, cheeses, vegetables, fruits, and more. Women who have already completed their shopping wait their turn for the town clerk, or schreiber, to pay for their goods as they giggle and gossip in line.
