Item Overview

Description

This is an original oil on canvas over crushed marble. The artist known for this method was Henry Benson who was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1930 and died in Florida in 1998. He used an innovative technique, which produced work that was impressionistic, with a raised surface that had an almost ‘sandy’ texture. The technique involved applying a rough textured surface to the canvas before starting his paintings. He then applied brilliant pastel colors to achieve the intended effect in his finished works which added movement and contrast of pointillism. Henry Benson was best known for his beach scenes with children as well as his ‘lifestyle’ scenes of New York City. Born in Brooklyn NY, he later moved to Wellsboro, PA. Upon finishing high school, he joined the US Marine Corp and fought in the First Marine Division of the Korean War. Henry Benson attended art school in Paris, France and New York City. He worked at the American Journal and the New York Stock Exchange in addition to being an accomplished professional artist. He moved to Boca Raton, Florida in 1975 and worked as an impressionistic painter. Henry loved people and always had a great sense of humor. Submitted by Christopher Benson, son of the artist.
