Description

An Egyptian pottery hippopotamus vessel
Middle Kingdom, 12th Dynasty, circa 1991-1786 B.C.
Modelled with broad snout and short tail, surmounted by a short necked aperture with everted rim, some red slip remaining, 4in (10cm) high, 7in (18cm) long; two pottery vessels, each with a single handle modelled as a cow's head, decorated with red on cream slip with rays at the shoulder, the bases decorated with four spiral motifs, Not Ancient, 5in and 6in (12.5cm and 15cm) diam excluding the lug handles; and a North African jar, Not Ancient (4)
