Item Overview

Description

measurements note
height 13in.; 33cm; width 15 3/8 in.; 39cm

within a silver-mounted neoclassical parcel-gilt frame, circa 1780

LITERATURE

RELATED LITERATURE:
Pierre Rosenberg and Jacques Thuillier, Laurent de la Hyre 1606-1656: L'homme et l'ouvre, Geneva, 1988, p. 223, cat. 175(1) and (2)

NOTE

The plaque is struck with the Roman town mark and a maker's mark. It has been suggested that the goldsmith is Antonio II Arrighi (1687-1776, master 1733), but the mark is insufficiently legible to be positively identified.
The later neoclassical frame is typical of one of the several Roman workshops of the 1780's, such as those of the Valadier, Belli or Spagna.
