Compare the closely related jade
qing plaque with reticulated dragons and phoenixes, illustrated by Knight, Li and Tse Bartholomew,
Chinese Jades: Ming Dynasty to Early Twentieth Century, from the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, San Francisco, 2007, p. 227, no. 249, described as late Qing dynasty or early Republic.

A stone
qing chime of closely related
ruyi ends in the Brundage Collection, also illustrated by Knight, Li and Tse Bartholomew, op. cit., p. 189, no. 197, noted by the author that in the mid- to late-19th century, the '
qing motif separated from its ritual function and became a decorative symbol.

The word
qing 磬 is a homophone of 慶, to celebrate, while the dragon and fish symbolize prosperity.
