PROVENANCE
Painted at Papunya in 1972 Painting number 14, consignment 15 to the Stuart Art Centre, Alice Springs Private collection, Adelaide Cf. For an extensive discussion of the artist's early paintings see Bardon, G. and J. Bardon, Papunya, A Place Made After the Story: The Beginnings of the Western Desert Painting Movement, The Miegunyah Press, Melbourne, 2004; for a related painting see 'Man's Ceremonial Dreaming', 1972 p.396, painting number 352 illus; and Myers, F. R., Painting Culture: The Making of an Aboriginal High Art, Duke University Press, Durham and London, 2002 (Myers refers to the artist as Yanyatjarri Tjakamarra). See also: Perkins, H. and H. Fink (eds), Papunya Tula: Genesis and Genius, Art Gallery of New South Wales in association with Papunya Tula Artists, Sydney, 2000; and Ryan, J., Mythscapes: Aboriginal Art of the Desert from the National Gallery of Victoria, National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, 1989 In this painting, two ritual camps are depicted as the roundels at the top and bottom of the work. Beside each of these is a ritual board carried by the senior men: that of the Tjampitjinpa skin group is at the top, that of the Tjapaltjarri at the bottom. The vertical black lines represent spears. The sections of red and of white dots indicate the plentiful supply of a variety of bush foods which means that the rains had fallen some time before This painting is sold with an accompanying annotated diagram describing the story depicted together with some notes written by Pat Hogan that suggest a relationship between the painting and some contemporary events that are unlikely to be factual. The notes read; 'Anatjara No. 3 has just come out of gaol after spearing incident at Papunya. During fights Timmy Jabanardi had spear wounds in lung and Tommy No. 4 lost his reproductive organs. Painting painted prior to conflict shows the premeditation of above incident'
