Item Overview

Description

signed and dated middle right on wall Despois/ 1824 and inscribed on the frame Despois l'île Barbe oil on canvas Despois entered the Ecole de Beaux Arts in 1807 as a pupil of both David and de Gros. He exhibited at the Salon from 1812-1834, and the present work was recorded at the Salon in Douai in 1825. The Isle of Barbe was first settled in Neolithic times. However, it was not until the founding of Lugdunum (modern day Lyon) in the First century B.C. that the island became a true settlement. In the 3rd century A.D. the Hermits Stephanus and Peregrinus founded a small church on the island and during the Middle Ages the island was home to Lyon's most powerful Abbeys. The countryside of the Jura around Lyon has long been noted for its beauty and was an area painted by many landscape painters.
