Item Overview

Description

Andreae, August Heinrich
1804 Horst - 1846 Hanover - attributed

Cologne. The old town and the Dreikönigspförtchen. Monogrammed and dated on the lower right: A.H.A. (ligature) 1834. Oil on canvas. 52,5 x 44cm. Framed.

The Hanover architect and painter August Heinrich Andreae was part of the anticlassicist reform movement in the 1930s. In the period of industrialisation, the anticlassicists realised buildings with romantic forms as for instance round archs. Hanover became a centre of this style that was in principle based on Schinkel's ideas from around 1830. The architects' romantic inclination is also visible in this painting representing Cologne's medieval alleys.
