Description

Coloured Engravings of Heaths. The Drawings taken from living plants only. With the appropriate specific character, full description, native place of growth, and time of flowering of each; in Latin and English. Each figure accompanied by accurate dissections of the several parts, (magnified where necessary,) upon which the specific distinction has been founded, according to the Linnaean System,, 4 vol., engraved dedication, 288 engraved plates, some printed in colours, all hand-coloured, lacks half-titles, title leaf in volume 4 is a volume 2 title altered by hand (as usual), occasional spotting, mostly to preliminaries and text leaves, early green morocco gilt, slightly rubbed, g.e. [Dunthorne 9; Great Flower Books, p.47; BBI 31; Pritzel 175], folio, by the Author, [1794]-1802-1809[-1830]

Rare with the fourth volume. Published over a duration of thirty-six years, originally in parts, this was, according to Blunt, Andrews' "finest achievement... noble in conception and impressive in execution." Andrews drew and engraved all the plates, and according to Dunthorne even did his own colouring. Most of the species figured were from South Africa, and were cultivated by the Hammersmith nurserymen Lee and Kennedy. SEE ILLUSTRATION at page 44.
