Item Overview

Description

Andries Both (1608-1649) attributed to, A brawl in a tavern (recto), medical treatment of a patient (verso), pen, black and brown ink, brown wash, over traces of black chalk, on laid paper, 29 x 38,8 cm, mounted, framed, (Sch) In these two drawings Andries Both was recording with a lot of humor two scenes of Dutch daily life at the beginning of the 17th century: a tavern brawl on the recto and the medical treatment of a patient on the reverse. The narrative character of the scenes and their humorous and caricatural interpretation are typical for the work of Both and his interest for the banalities of every day life. Literature: See "Brueghel to Rembrandt. Dutch and Flemish drawings from the Maida and George Abrahams Collections", Harvard University Publications, 2002, No. 40, p. 106. Specialist: Mag.
