This pair originally formed part of a set of the Five Senses, which were engraved by Andries' brother Jan Both. Another work from this series, the sense of Sight, was in the F.C. Butôt collection until sold, Amsterdam, Sotheby's, 17 November 1993, lot 44. There is a preliminary drawing for the sense of Hearing in the British Museum, London.υ1 Another version of Hearing, signed and somewhat larger in size, formerly in the collection of the Duke of Bedford, was sold, London, Christie's, 19 January 1951, lot 10 (together with its pendant, lot 9, the sense of Feeling) and another inferior version of Hearing was sold Amsterdam, Sotheby's, 3 May 1999, lot 16. A similar version of the sense of Smell is in the museum of the University of Uppsala, Sweden (inv. No. UU809).
