Anthony Stannus was born in Carrickfergus, County Antrim, and was educated at the Royal Belfast Academical Institution, before studying art at the Belfast School of design from 1850 to 1854. He moved to London to study in the Training School for Masters, and Dowlais School in Wales. He went to Mexico in 1864 where he was employed as an artist in the army of Maximilian in Mexico, and later as a correspondent for the Illustrated London News. He returned to London in 1868, and moved to Belfast in 1882. He exhibited in both Belfast and London. He was a member of the Belfast Ramblers' Sketching Club, and was its President for five years. He was elected an honorary member of the Belfast Art Society in 1891. He died in London in 1919. His work is represented in the Ulster Museum, the Belfast Harbour Office and the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Premium & Taxes

The buyer shall pay the Auctioneer a commission at the rate of 24.6% (which includes VAT at the prevailing rate under The Margin Scheme and which is not reclaimable). A further charge of 6.15% (which includes VAT at the prevailing rate) is made by Invaluable to on-line bidders; a reduced charge of 3.69% including VAT applies to purchases made by clients of Whyte's who bid through Whyte's website, whytes.ie

Payment

Each lot shall be paid for in full before delivery and taken away at his/her expense within seven days of the sale.
