A reputable portraitist of his time, Ansiaux received numerous commissions for portraits of generals such as Kleber and Kellerman (both part of the collection at the Musée National du Château de Versailles).

Ansiaux departed for Paris after his studies in Liège and Antwerp, joining the studio of the French neo-classicist François André Vincent in 1783. Though his career would be mainly based in Paris, he consistently exhibited at the Société d'Emulation in Liège, and painted monumental religious subjects for churches in both countries.
