Moulinet started his career as a primary school teacher. He came to Paris to work in the studio of Gleyre at the school of Beaux-Arts, then with Giraud. He showed for the first time at the Salon in 1859 painting mostly still-lives and children, continuing to exhibit until 1881. He was made teacher of design at the lycée de Chartres where the museum has conserved his work.
