ANTON DOMINIK FERNKORN GERMAN 1813 - 1878 ST GEORGE AND THE DRAGON with a plaque inscribed: K. K. KUNST - ERZGIESSEREI bronze, mid to dark brown patina 52.5 by 43.5cm., 20 3/4 by 17 1/8 in.

Notes

Fernkorn's monumental bronze group of St. George and the Dragon is known in a photograph of the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1855 where it towered over the sculpture court. Completed in 1853, it was installed on a large marble plinth in Zagreb, Croatia, then part of the Hungarian dominions of Austria-Hungary. A marble version is also known there, in the Ethnographic Museum.
