NOTE

Einsle's reclining nude may have been inspired by Ingres' 1814 Grand Odalisque in the Louvre. Ingres' model looks directly at the viewer while Einsle's mirror acts as an interesting compositional device. Here he takes an old Viennese subject of the Odalisque, and chooses to represent the front and back of the figure simultaneously by means of a mirror. This work also recalls the themes of the Biedermeier era, as the woman looks over her nude shoulder and her shirt falls to her waist, which also recalls "A Girl before a Mirror" by Johann Baptist Reiter from 1841, the same year Einsle studied at St. Anna.
