Item Overview

Description

ANTONIO DE SIMONE (ITALIAN, 1851-1907)
The Royal Thames Yacht Club Steam Yacht "Hiawatha" underway off Naples
Signed 'De S...' (lower right, obscured by mount)
Watercolour
18 x 25in. (46 x 63.5cm.)
Built in 1879 for J.B. Perret by Mitchell & Co, Newcastle, she was originally launched as the Nora, a three-masted iron hulled yacht registered at 176'8" with a 26'15" beam, draught of 13'4" and 529 tons. In 1888 she was bought by D.H. Macfarlane and renamed the Hiawatha and it was probably Macfarlane who commissioned this typical product of the De Simone workshop. Her owner is listed as James Douglas Baird in 1898-9 who was a Royal Yacht Squadron member and not Royal Thames. Her name changed several more times - Clara (1911); Polygon (1915); La Valette (1916); Akbas (1930); Yeni Gundogu (1966) and lastly the B.Kartal (1984), she was finally deleted from the lists in 2005 after apparently fulfilling her rôle for 126 years.
