An avid yachtsman Commodore Stewart also was a member of the 1930 America's Cup Committee and chairman of the committee in 1934, 1937 and 1958. At the time of his death he was Chairman of the America's Cup Policy Committee for the coming races in 1962 under the challenge of the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron. He was also the commodore of the Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club from 1923-1927. It was under his leadership that the Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club became of international importance in the racing of small yachts immediately after World War I and he guided the America's Cup negotiations with great skill commencing in 1930 and continuing for the rest of his life.
