Archibald S. Henning is known predominantly for his depiction of Judge and Jury Societies which became popular in taverns and inns across London where members of the public would take part in trial re-enactments. A comparable racing scene (Anonymous sale, Christie's London, 17th March 1972, lot 95), dated 1841, relates closely to the present pair of pictures.
