Lot 24: ARKHIP IVANOVICH KUINDZHI (1842-1910)

PROVENANCE Property of the artist until his death in 1910 Kuinji Society sold by the above to Mr Pavlov, in 1912 sold by the above to Mr Soloviev, in 1927 purchased by the antique shop Mostorg in 1931 purchased by a representaive of the Greek Embassy in Moscow in 1931 and thence by decent NOTES Arkhip Ivanovich Kuindzhi was born in the town of Mariupol on the Azov sea, Kuindzhi studied at the St. Petersburg Academy of the Arts, trained under the patronage of the famous seascape painter Ivan Aivazovskii. He painted essentailly landscapes and seascapes. Works by Kuindzhi are extremely rare on the market, and a painting by this artist with such a detailed provenance is almost unique.
