The present painting is a portrait of the Norwegian Crown Princess. She was a royal figure held in high regard for her international influence, her promotion of Norway particularly during World War II. Her close ties with President Roosevelt were such that she is said to have greatly influenced his 'Look to Norway' speech of 1942. Märtha Sofia Lovisa Dagmar Thyra was born in Sweden in 1901 and died in Norway in 1954 and was the mother of the current King Harald of Norway.
