DESCRIPTION: Art archive of Henry A. Wight. Art includes: five framed etchings, one painting on wood board, six paintings on porcelain tiles, two albums of etchings, crayon drawings and poems, three colored etchings on loose paper, nine black and white etchings in mattes, eight colored etchings in mattes, file of photographs of his art with etchings, various postcards and advertising from gallery exhibitions, photograph of the artist, and artist's personal leatherbound notebook containing handwritten poems, notes, drawings. Matted etchings and works on paper contained in a black artist's portfolio. Includes a file folder with handwritten titles of etchings. Henry Ames Wight was an artist active during the 1920's and could be considered one of the earliest Surrealist artists. He held several exhibitions of his work during this time including an Exhibition of Monotypes in Color at The Ehrich Galleries from February 17 to March 3, 1923 in New York which was also held at the Worcester Art Museum - one monotype in this archive, "Symphony of the Universe", still bears the number "58" per the catalogue of monotypes shown during this exhibit. Mr. Raymond Henniker-Heaton wrote a prologue for the Exhibition at the Worcester Art Museum where he noted Wight's first works as manifesting itself in landscapes and small figures conceived in a spirit of romanticism while his later monotypes are more emotional, more abstract and more original. MEASUREMENTS: Various. CONDITION: Works on paper with tears, bending, and folds to edges. Toning throughout etchings and works. Rubbing to edges, binding, and surface of notebook.
