Description

Arthur Douglas Peppercorn NEA ROI 1847-1924- Wooded landscape; oil on canvas, signed, 54x33cm (unframed). Note: Peppercorn, nicknamed 'our English Corot', worked in a style reminiscent of the Barbizon school of painters, whom he met in Paris whilst studying at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1870 under Grme. Also greatly influenced by the Dutch landscaper painter Matthew Maris. He mainly painted woodland scenes and later marine scenes Peppercorn was an active exhibitor in London from 1869, showing at the Royal Academy, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, Fine Art Society, Dudley Gallery, Grosvenor Gallery, New Gallery, New English Art Club, Society of British Artists, a society that appointed JW its President in 1886, and International Society of Sculptors, Painters and Gravers, a society that formed with JW as its President in 1898. He also held one-man shows at the Goupil Galleries. He was elected a member of the New English Art Club in 1887, of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in 1896 and of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours in 1897, resigning from the latter in 1903. In 1926 a memorial exhibition of his work was held at the Leicester Galleries.
