Item Overview

Description

ARTOIS, Charles-Philippe, Comte D', Later King Charles X of France (1757-1836) -- Claude Martin SAUGRAIN. Catalogue des livres du cabinet de Monseigneur Comte d'Artois. Paris: Imprimerie de Didot l'aîné, 1783.

Large 4 o (303 x 230 mm). Contemporary boards, covered with paper imitating tree-calf, uncut and unopened (repaired, spine partly perished). Provenance: Maurice Escoffier (bookplate, his catalogue no.160); A.L. McLaughlin (bookplate).

ONE OF ONLY 15 COPIES PRINTED BY FRANçOIS-AMBROISE DIDOT, all on heavy papier vélin, of the private library of the Comte d'Artois, the younger brother of Louis XVIII, and later King of France (1824-1830). Its 1,313 works are classified under subjects, with an alphabetical author index. Archer Taylor was unable to trace a copy of this work, citing only two microfilms of it; his conclusion, stated in "Book Catalogues," 2nd edn., p. 231, that it concerned the Arsenal Library of the Marquis de Paulmy which Artois bought two years later is incorrect. The compiler of the catalogue was the bookseller Saugrain who, after Paulmy's death, "became the true master of the library" at the Arsenal. Taylor, p.5.
