STUDY OF A MAN IN ORIENTAL DRESS Oil on panel, in a period frame The reverse of the panel bears the brand of the Antwerp Panel Makers' Guild, and a maker's mark: LS (Lambert Steens) 63.5 by 49 cm.; 25 by 19 1/4 in. This work is similar to paintings on panel of similar size which appear to form part of a series, and which have been attributed to Wolffert by Hans Vlieghe (see H. Vlieghe, 'Zwischen van Veen und Rubens: Artus Wolffort (1581-1641), ein vergessener Antwerpener Maler', in Wallraf-Richatz-Jahrbuch, 1977, pp. 96-7, figs. 5-8 (a series of Evangelists), pp. 102-3, figs 14-17). On the basis of a photograph, Dr. Vlieghe has kindly confirmed the attribution of the present painting.
