Item Overview

Description

ASAHEL LYNDE POWERS
American, 1813-1843

Pair of wedding portraits of Colonel Butterfield and his wife Octavia. The Colonel wears the uniform of the 26th Regiment of Vermont Militia. One dated 1836 on reverse.
Acquired by the current owner from a man on the North Shore resident many years ago. The current owner was informed by the Butterfields' great great granddaughter of a letter she received from the Springfield Historical Society. The granddaughter had read a story about the Society loaning their Powers painting to the exhibit of the Rockefeller Folk Art Collection in Williamsburg, VA in 1973. This prompted her to bring her family's portraits to their attention. Mrs. Fred Herrick of the Historical Society replied: "This is very exciting because the people who have done research on this subject and the woman, Nina Little, who is writing a book on Powers, has come to the conclusion that all of Powers' work is accounted for except three". It appears that these are two of the three missing portraits.
Oil on canvas, 20" x 19 1/4". Wax relining. Framed.
