ASCRIBED TO LOUISE HOLLANDINE PRINCESS PALATINE (1622- 1709) PORTRAIT OF A LADY, SAID TO BE MARY STUART (1631 - 1660), WIFE OF WILLIAM II, PRINCE OF ORANGE-NASSAU 101.5 by 81 cm. Half length, standing in a landscape, dressed as Diana Oil on canvas Condition Note: The canvas has an old relining. The paint surface, which is covered in a layer of dirt and discoloured varnish, is in quite good condition. There is a very prominent stretcher mark to the edge. There is a large paint loss to the lower right and minor restored holes to the centre right and upper left and a tear to the upper left (5cm). Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals no further restoration. Offered in a gilt wood frame in good condition. Mary Stuart (1631-1660), was the daughter of King Charles I of England, and his wife, Queen Henrietta. In 1641 she married William II, Prince of Orange-Nassau, and their son became King William III of England. Louise Hollandine, Princess Palatine, was the second daughter of Frederick V, King of Bohemia, and became a painter and pupil of Gerrit van Honthorst in the Hague.
