Item Overview

Description

AARON ARROWSMITH (1750-1823)
Asia. London: A. Arrowsmith, 1 January 1801 [but c. 1810?]. Engraved wall map in 24 sections, hand-coloured in outline and mounted on linen, 1260 x 1470mm. overall, folding. (Slight waterstains at upper margin, some faint browning.)

FINE WALL MAP dedicated to Major James Rennell (1742-1830) and including the track of the Lion 1793. The esteemed surveyor-general for the East India Company, Rennell had brought out a Bengal Atlas in 1781 and continued to publish maps of India during the 1790s. Arrowsmith's dedication probably reflects an obligation to him in regard to the mapping of India, though not all his information was so recent, parts of Japan apparently being taken from Jansson's sea chart of 1658. The Lion, commanded by Sir Erasmus Gower, was the ship in which Lord Macartney voyaged to China in his embassy of 1793-94.
