DESCRIPTION: Attributed to Sigismund de Ivanowski (American, 1875-1944). Oil on canvasboard. The Pond in the Woods. Verso mounted with notarized statement from original paper backing dated January 13, 1921 identifying the work to be that of de Ivanowski signed by Frederick C. Gordon. In gilded frame. Sigismund de Ivanowski was born in Kurylowka, Ukraine in 1875. He studied art under such artists as Wojcieca Gerson, Jean Paul Laurens, Benjamin Constant and James Abbott McNeill Whistler and also attended the St. Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He was known as a painter of portraits, nudes, genre, and cityscapes. His portrait subjects included Theodore Roosevelt and Ignace Jan Paderewski. From 1906 to 1914, he painted a series of actresses for "Century" magazine. He was married in 1900 to Helen Moser Gordon, the adopted sister of the illustrator and artist James Henry Moser and the ex-wife of the artist Frederick C. Gordon, who signed the statement on the back of this piece. MEASUREMENTS: 16-1/2" x 12-1/2". Overall with frame 19-5/8" x 15-7/8". CONDITION: Very minor frame wear.
