Entering the Irish Parliament in 1775 aged only 29, Grattan soon became leader of the National Party, fighting for the Irish Parliament to gain independence from the British Parliament in London. He also founded the Irish Volunteers, an armed militia, set up to protect Ireland from a possible Franco-Spanish revolutionary attack whilst the majority of their troops had been called to fight with the British in the American War of Independence.
