black chalk and grey wash

Notes

This lively, accomplished drawing is rather more refined and less angular in execution than is entirely typical of Andries Both; yet the similarities, particularly in facial types, with Both drawings such as The Happy Painter (sold, London, Christie's, 10 July 2001, lot 171) and its pair, The Distressed Painter in the British Museum, suggest that this is nonetheless likely to be the correct attribution.
