A terminus ante quem for the present watercolour is provided by the presence of the shield which hangs over the entrance to the Palazzo Vecchio. Bearing the crest of the Medici Grand Dukes, this shield was erected in 1529 and taken down in 1851. The attribution to Rossi- Melocchi has been suggested on the basis of stylistic similarities with his views of Florence, such as that of the Pazzi Chapel (Firenze e la sua immagine, exhib. cat., Florence, Forte di Belvedere, 1994, p. no. 112, ill.).
