Related to Baburen's painting of The Entombment (1617) in San Pietro in Montorio, Rome (Fig. 1; L.J. Slatkes, Dirck van Baburen (c. 1595-1624): A Dutch painter in Utrecht and Rome, Utrecht, 1965, no. A3). It is difficult to reconstruct Baburen's personality as a draughtsman, as only one or two of his drawings survive; and yet the present work, with its pentimenti and differences from the finished picture and its similarities to the graphic work of Baburen's contemporaries, such as Gerrit van Honthorst, presents a convincing case for an addition to his oeuvre.
