This attribution was first proposed by Professor Federico Zeri whose photographic archives are held by the University of Bologna.
This and a Saint John the Baptist (Cassa di Risparmio di Ferrara on deposit at the Pinacoteca Nazionale, Ferrara) are respectively the right and left sections of a banner, or telero vitagliato, which originally showed the Madonna between the two saints. The two were evidentially acquired by Marchese Giovanni Battista Costabili who had inherited a significant collection from his uncle Francesco Containi in 1778 and greatly enlarged this in the ensuing decades. Traditionally attributed to Francesco del Cossa, the picture was later attributed to the Veronese Master of the Cespo di Garofano, much of whose oeuvre was formerly attributed to Francesco dai Libri.
