Notes

PROPERTY FROM A PRIVATE COLLECTION, NEW YORK
Reel, a grey mare foaled in 1838 was owned by T.J. Wells. Col. Wells' home Wellswood was located near Alexandria, Louisiana. Reel became one of the foundation mares for the Stud book. Reel was depicted by Troye when she was 20 years old. A larger version of this painting is in the possession of the Jockey Club.
