Notes

This imposing drawing, a life-size study after a model, must have served as a cartoon, but no related painting has been identified. It would seem to date from the early years of the 17th century and is reminiscent of the works of Simon Vouet and the Caravaggist artists working around him in Rome, as well as those of Eustache Le Sueur. The scale of the drawing makes it difficult to compare with the published corpus of drawings by those artists, but the link with Le Sueur seems on balance the closest.
